UPPER PENINSULA, MI (May 4, 2021) ― Northern Michigan is home to more than eight million acres of forestland, most of which belongs to private landowners. With spring approaching, now is a perfect time to consider the health and sustainability of UP forestland.
Beginning on Wed. May 19, JML Forestry, a Longyear company, will host a series of free virtual learning events across Northern Michigan for landowners interested in exploring how careful forest management can help their land grow healthier, increase its value, and earn revenue from well-planned harvests.
Sustainable land management balances environmental concerns with the health and value of forestland. Selective harvests diversify the age and species of trees, making forests more resistant to pests, disease, and the impact of climate change.
The removal of carefully selected trees allows sunlight to more easily reach the understory, encouraging regeneration and new growth. Responsible, ethical forest management also helps sustain a diverse array of wildlife by making sure that habitats remain safe and undisturbed. It even increases the value of forestland. From recreational use to timber sales, an experienced forestry team can help keep forestland healthy for a variety of uses.
Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is home to 45 percent of the state’s forestland. The land continues to grow and thrive, thanks to the efforts of local experts who lead the nation in practicing effective forest management and sustainable timber harvesting techniques.
“Our U.P. forestry team is dedicated to preserving the natural resources and habitats of our region,” says Tim Schneider, JML Forestry Operations General Manager. “We know what an impact our forests have on the health of the Upper Peninsula and our planet. That’s why we’re committed to sharing our expertise with our friends and neighbors who own and care for this beautiful land.”
JML Forestry’s virtual learning series, to be held via Zoom, will kick off on Wed. May 19 with a focus on Western U.P. Each session will feature a presentation followed by a question-and-answer session. Two one-hour time slots will available for each date: 11:30 AM EDT and at 7:00 PM EDT. The region-specific events include:
- May 19: Western & Southern UP
- June 2: Central & Eastern UP
- June 16: Northern Lower Peninsula
